“You get to be very present,” [Emily] Ruff said. “The more you understand about its history and its past, the more you can have a relationship with its current state.” Ruff emphasized the significance of Birdhers’ mission to make outdoor activities more accessible to LGBTQ people. “It’s important, as somebody who has those identities, you don’t often see others in these spaces,” Ruff said. “Having been on other Birdhers walks, the community building is a big reason why we keep coming back.”

“I think that Birdhers in particular has been a huge, huge part of maintaining my mental health and sanity over the last year,” [Trisha Kumar] said. “I’m somebody who talks a lot and is always thinking about and doing so many different things. Birding gets me out into nature at any point in the year, and it is one of the only times when I really feel like I can be quiet and focus on one thing, because I’m listening for birds and looking for things. It’s just truly wonderful.”
